Bread
Bread, as we all know, is made from baking dough. The dough is made from flour and water. Addition of salt, any leavening agent like yeast or baking powder, eggs, milk, sugar, spices, different types of fruits like raisins, almonds, poppy seeds, vegetables like onions are optional.
Fresh simple bread has two parts- the upper brown layer is called ‘Crust’ and the inner soft, bubbly, fleshy layer is called the ‘Crumb’. The quality of bread is dependent on its freshness that makes it more tempting. Older bread that has lost this property is called ‘Stale’ that has shelved either in a refrigerator or a cool temperature or in a moist place.
Now-a-days, bakeries are supplying bread wrapped in thin, plastic airtight covering to maintain its freshness.
Bread is undoubtedly one of the oldest eatables of the human civilization. In ancient ages, wheat was grown in Mesopotamia and it was taken after chewing. Later it was discovered that wheat can be crushed and made to form dough after addition of water. It was also noticed that the dough tastes better if it was heated over a hot stone. This was the first bread made for human consumption. Gradually, modification and remodification of the recipe has taken place.
In recent times, bread is prepared all over the world according to hundreds of different recipes. It is most popular in America, Europe, the Middle-East and India.
