Topping
Toppings are the food items placed at the top and used to enhance the taste and flavor of any other foods. Taste of various items can be enhanced with toppings. The mostly used items are pizza, ice cream, pancakes, pastries, desserts and sandwiches. Numerous food items can be used as toppings. The following are worth mentioning: -
In pizza toppings cheese (usually mozzarella and provolone type; but a blend of other cheeses are also used), sauce (conventionally tomato puree, alfredo, pesto, barbecue sauce, mayonnaise and occasionally a mixture of tomato puree and green chilli are used), herbs (oregano, basil and garlic), different vegetables (like mushrooms, eggplants, artichoke hearts, olives, spinach and onions), meat (in the form of sausage – salami, pepperoni; bacon, ham ground beef chicken and pork or seafood like tuna, anchovies and shrimp) and fruits (tomato, jalapeños and pineapple) are used.
Ice cream toppings are usually cream, cocoa, strawberries, blueberries and cherries. Sometimes, icing sugar is also used as ice cream toppings.
Pancake and pastries’ toppings include chocolate, cocoa, cream and icing sugar.
Any dessert can not be completed without toppings. Any kind of sweet fruit like cherry, strawberry pieces, blueberries, nuts like cashew, almond, and raisins are used.
Toppings increases taste of any food; simultaneously it increases the calorie content also. The overweight persons should try to cut down the toppings as much as possible.
